Otoplasty Allows You to Change The Shape and Size of Your Ear

Some people are born with prominent ears that tend to stick out from the side of their head. Many times this occurs because the folds in the cartilage of the ear have just not developed. An Otoplasty is performed to correct the asymmetry. Many adults wear their hair long to cover up prominent ears. Many women refuse to wear their hair up because of prominent ears.

An Otoplasty takes approximately one hour to perform. The technique used is typically an incision approximately 1 1/2 inches long in the crease behind the ear where the cartilage is exposed. The fold is re-created, if needed, and the cartilage is secured to the back of the head. Precise measurements are taken so both ears protrude from the side of the head approximately 12-15 mm after the surgery. Both permanent and dissolvable sutures are used to help maintain the new shape of the ear. The dissolvable sutures fall out about a week after surgery.
